Query Letter Guide

How to Write a Query Letter

A query letter is your first introduction to us as a publisher. Think of it as a professional cover letter for your manuscript. Please keep your query to one page, no more than 500 words.

Note: We only consider complete, finished manuscripts. Do not query us until your manuscript is fully written and has been through at least one round of revision.

01) Opening Hook

Start with one or two sentences that immediately convey what makes your book special. This is your chance to grab our attention. Lead with the most compelling element of your story or argument.

EXAMPLE

"When a forensic accountant discovers her firm has been laundering money for a cartel, she has 48 hours to disappear—or become the next line item."

02) Book Details

Include the following information clearly and concisely:

  • The full title of your manuscript
  • Genre: Be specific (e.g. cozy mystery, romantic suspense)
  • Word count: Rounded to the nearest thousand
  • Series potential: Standalone or planned series, and how many books

03) Synopsis Paragraph

Write 2-4 sentences that summarize your story. Introduce the protagonist, the central conflict, and what's at stake. Focus on the plot and the emotional core.

Note: Do not reveal the ending in your query letter. You may reveal the ending in the separate synopsis file submitted.

04) Comparable Titles (comp titles)

List 2-3 published books that are similar in tone, theme, or audience to yours. Briefly explain the comparison.

  • Choose books published within the last 3-5 years
  • Pick titles that were successful, not mega-bestsellers
  • Explain why they're comparable, not just the titles themselves
EXAMPLE

"For readers who love the small-town charm of [Title A] and the dark twists of [Title B]."

05) Author Bio

Write 2-4 sentences about yourself in third-person. Include any of the following that apply:

  • Previous publishing credits
  • Relevant professional experience or expertise
  • Memberships in writing organizations
  • Awards, contests, or notable recognition

No publishing credits? That's perfectly fine. Share what qualifies you to write this particular book.

06) Personalization (optional, but encouraged)

If you're querying a specific editor or imprint, briefly mention why. Maybe there's a book of ours you admire, a panel you attended, or a specific fit with our catalog. Keep this to one sentence.
