What's New with Eugene J. DiCesaris
- How did you get started with writing?
I've wanted to write, going as far back as when I was in junior high, but never seemed to have the motivation or time to actually give it a serious try. However, years later, and after I married, my wife, Eva, suggested I consider it again, in large part because writing might help me recuperate from my prior quadruple heart bypass surgery, and also because she truly believed I could be successful as a writer.
It's because of her loving encouragement and support that I'm now a published author.
- What's your latest book? What inspired the series?
I'm currently working on a set that focuses on two characters who first appeared in my "Clayton Sharp" historical fiction Western series--outlaws Joe and Russ DiMarco.
The two brothers are interesting contradictions in thought, behavior, and expectations--not only between themselves, but also as a team against everything around them.
Russ--the oldest--is the thoughtful, level-headed moral compass of the pair, while Joseph mostly provides the spontaneous, often comical, pragmatism that balances the team.
I came to believe they needed their own series, because their chemistry and banter needed to be showcased. In addition, I simply came to enjoy having them in my stories.
- What does a typical writing day look like for you?
What's that? Actually, with all kidding aside, I've tried to get a bit more structured in my habits, but it's not easy. So many other things tug at my attention that, on some days, I barely write anything.
In general, though, I do a lot of my writing on an iPad either in my study in the afternoon, or/and at night when I'm in bed.
- What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
As much as it sounds trite, it's still true: believe in yourself, keep writing, make friends with other writers, and make sure you know why you want to write. If you're in it for money, good luck. If you write for enjoyment, you'll be successful--and still might make some money!
- What inspires you to write? What do you hope readers will take away from your stories?
Writing relaxes, challenges, and provides me an artistic outlet. It gives me the opportunity to share my stories and imagination with others.
In turn, if what I write makes a reader smile or laugh; ponder and reflect; or just kill a little time while waiting in a doctor's office, that's reward enough for me.
