McKendree Long
McKendree R. (Mike) Long III is a former paratrooper with tours as an advisor to Vietnamese Army artillery and infantry battalions, in 1966 and 1970. His awards and decorations include the Parachutist Badge, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Silver Star, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (Gold and Silver Stars). He is a graduate of Coker College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
After retiring from the US Army in 1980, he was a Financial Advisor with a major investment firm for 29 years, retiring as a First Vice President (Investments) at the end of 2009. Since then he has completed and has published four historical novels and eight short stories. His first three books compose the Superstition Gun Trilogy: NO GOOD LIKE IT IS, DOG SOLDIER MOON, and HIGHER GROUND. BRODIE is his fourth, and the sequel (working title: CURLY JACK) will be completed in 2018.
Long's activities/clubs include the NRA, Western Writers of America, Western Fictioneers, Highland Warriors, Military Writers Society of America, SC Writers Association, Ozark Creative Writers, SC Arms Collectors Association, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
He and Mary were married in 1960; they have two married daughters, four grandchildren (two married), and four great-grandchildren (plus one on the way).
Mike is an avid collector and shooter of guns of the Old West; readers of his works may learn much about them, whether they set out to or not.
His favorite review of NO GOOD LIKE IT IS reads in part: “(Long's) characters don't spend much time contemplating the texture of the moss on the log they are shooting over. I consider that to be ‘fluff.' I was watching for it, and didn't find any. I like that.”
McKendree Long now devotes his time to his family, research, writing, guns, and travel. He is often found on Seabrook Island, SC.
