James Hopwood is the pen name of Australian adventure writer, David James Foster. He is the author of the retro-spy thrillers, The Librio Defection, The Danakil Deception, and The Ambrosia Kill.

Writing as Jack Tunney, he scribed three books in the popular Fight Card series, King of the Outback, Rumble in the Jungle, and The Iron Fists of Ned Kelly. He also contributed to the charity anthologies, Iron Head and Other Stories, and Battling Mahoney and Other Stories.

A lifelong fan and student of popular fiction, James Hopwood contributed several articles on 1960’s counterculture spy novels to Girl Gangs, Biker Boys, and Real Cool Cats: Pulp Fiction and Youth Culture 1950 to 1980. He also contributed articles on vigilantism to Sticking it to the Man: Revolution and Counterculture in Pulp and Popular Fiction 1950 to 1980.

James Hopwood is an active member of the writing community, serving as Vice-President of Frankston Writers Block, and Secretary of Mornington Peninsula Writers. He is also a founding member of the Union Street Collective, a group of artists, photographers, writers and poets, who produce startling art books, designed to stir the soul and imagination.

For many years, James Hopwood worked full-time in graphic arts, writing only in his spare time. But in 2017 he switched things up, and walked away from the cut-throat world of advertising. He now works part-time in the hospitality industry, which allows him many more hours to devout to his craft, and indulge his passion for retro-trash cinema.

Hopwood grew up on the river, in country Victoria, but has been drifting south for the last 30 years. He now resides in Seaford, a stone’s throw from the pier featured in the original Mad Max.
