Happy National Authors Day

Happy National Author Day 2017

November is here, fall is all around us, and what could be better than curling up with a good book and wandering off to another world? While you enjoy that book, the story it tells, and the world it takes you to, you have no other concerns (except maybe finishing it too quickly.) November 1st, however is the day we need to sit back and think about all the hard work that went into the story on those pages.

“Every author and every book I read inspires me.” – C.K. Crigger

Every year on November 1st, we celebrate National Authors Day. This is a day to celebrate the authors we love and the hard work and dedication that goes into the books we enjoy.

In 1949 the United States Department of Commerce officially recognized National Authors Day as a holiday. This came about 20 years after Nellie Verne Burt McPherson began pushing for the day to celebrate authors. Nellie was president of the Bement, Illinois Women’s Club, a teacher, and a passionate reader. She began pushing for national Authors Day because she wanted to find a way to thank an author for the gift of his story, and did not know how.

“I found I really enjoyed telling the story and have found it very gratifying that others have enjoyed reading it.” – Lane R Warenski

Now, on this day, we honor authors and find ways to thank them for their work. Go buy a book, old or new. Write a thank you note to an author, send them an email, and use the popular hashtag #NationalAuthorsDay.

We all have a story, but these are the people that make those stories come alive, and for that we are thankful.

“But whatever you do – keep on writing. The Universe has tapped you, so do your part, and write that story!” – Linell Jeppsen
